In this case, no news is not good news. Both sides are holding tight. some players, [most publicized are the big stars of course] are heading for other countries to play hockey. some younger players have been assigned back to lower leagues and Juniors. So both sides are rattling their sabers and showing they are prepared for a long lockout. Some of this is posturing and some is just the expected course of events.
As soon as both sides have shown they are serious, expect some informal talks to begin. There are big pros for both sides to get a contract so no regular season games are lost. [a] for the players, if they loose approximately 8 games, they will have lost as much as accepting the contract offered by the owners. So if they can avoid loosing 8 games, they will loose only approximately 10%. And for every 8 games they will loose approximately 10% even before the loss they will have when they do accept a contract. And, they will loose when they do accept a contract. [b] For the owners, if they can start the season without loosing games they will salvage the NBC contract and the delayed playing without payment issues in 2021. Also they will gain a full season of revenues in tickets, concessions, etc. etc., etc.,
